Books I read

When I first set my official career goal to be an advocate for children at age 21, one of the first things I did was go shopping at bookstores (new and used) to purchase any book I could find that I felt might be on the topic of advocating for children. I had a five foot high bookcase in my room at the time, and the goal was to fill it from top to bottom with these books.

The first book I read was It Takes a Village by Hillary Clinton. I also read several books by Jonathan Kozol and Marian Wright Edleman

Another book I read was The Best Interest of the Child (Least Detrimental Alternative ) which was actually a trilogy of books. Years later as a court appointed advocate for a child, I was telling my supervisor the title of the book. She said, “So basically, whichever alternative sucks less.”

I definitely recycled books as I went, because the content of said books was not agreeable or outright ridiculous. As audiobooks have become more and more popular and I have come to accept that I have late diagnosed ADHD, I have slowly gotten rid of these books by either selling them at garage sales, the buy counter at half price books, or recycling them.

I know I had many more books on that shelf than the ones listed here, but specific memories elude me at this time. If I remember more details, I will post again.
